This sermon was based on Ecclesiastes 11: 1 – 6.

Cast Your Bread upon the Waters

1 Cast your bread upon the waters,
for you will find it after many days.
2 Give a portion to seven, or even to eight,
for you know not what disaster may happen on earth.
3 If the clouds are full of rain,
they empty themselves on the earth,
and if a tree falls to the south or to the north,
in the place where the tree falls, there it will lie.
4 He who observes the wind will not sow,
and he who regards the clouds will not reap.
5As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.
6In the morning sow your seed, and at evening withhold not your hand, for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good.

KEY POINTS

 

Give it all because we are told to live by faith

  • God calls us to give all of ourselves to Him, living in faith that He will sustain us — Verses 1 and 2.
  • This is a daunting thing to do, one that can often feel a little risky. Humans like to be in control of their own destiny.
  • But by giving ourselves fully to God, we also get the best life from Him — He is far wiser than we are.

 

Give it all because you don’t know what’s going to happen

  • We do not know what will happen in the future, good or bad — Verse 2
  • Because of this, we often live our lives in fear of having regrets, leading us to either be extremely cautious or we can throw ourselves into something with passion wholeness.
  • Not knowing can lead to hesitation; Ecclesiastes states that not knowing should lead us to wholeheartedly following God.

Give it all because that’s what we’re meant to do

  • Everything has a purpose; our purpose is to love God with all our hearts, minds, souls, and strength.
  • God calls us to love Him, and thereby follow and obey Him, with everything that we have. We are not called to be lukewarm.
