BIBLE VERSES

This sermon was based on John 20:19-31.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

19On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
21Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

Jesus Appears to Thomas

24Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

26A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

28Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

29Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

The Purpose of John’s Gospel

30Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

KEY POINTS

Doubt to Belief

  • Jesus rising from the dead changes everything
  • Thomas was full of doubt – yet when he met Jesus his doubts were transformed.
  • Jesus rising from the dead changes doubt to belief

Sadness to Joy

  • On Easter Sunday morning Mary was crying outside the tomb
  • By the evening the disciples were overjoyed – the difference was the realisation that Jesus had risen from the dead.
  • Jesus rising from the dead Changes sadness to Joy

Fear to Boldness

  • The disciples were hiding together with the doors locked, they were terrified.
  • Then Jesus rises and appears to them – tells them to get the doors unlocked & go out in the power of the Holy Spirit and make disciples of all nations.
  • Jesus rising from the dead changes fear to boldness

Comfortable Lives into Missional Lives

  • The disciples were hiding together with the doors locked, they were terrified.
  • Then Jesus rises and they’re comfortable lives are transformed into missional lives. They all go and devote their lives to sharing this good news.
  • Comfort is the God of our age. Being comfortable in life, having all the stuff we want, is what so many people live for above all else. We have a tendency to make idols of our homes. Not to say being comfortable and doing home improvements is bad but when it’s what we daydream about it’s got our heart and it’s drawn our focus away from God’s mission.

Hopelessness to Hope

  • Disciples looked pretty hopeless after Jesus’ death. They were hiding in a locked room for fear of their lives | Everything they’d done over the last three years seemed to be for nothing now that Jesus had been killed. It was over.
  • It Proved he had defeated sin and death once and for all. It Proved he was who he said he was. The Saviour of the World the Messiah, the only one who could save us from our sins and offer us life, eternal life.
  • It Changed everything! It changed these scared, sad, hopeless followers of Jesus into confident, Joyful, Spirit Filled missional people who had a renewed sense of meaning and purpose in life.
