2 Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. 3 At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison — 4 that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak. 
5 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

KEY POINTS

 

God Is the One Who Grows the Seed

  • Looking at 1 Corinthians 3:5-7, we can see that as much as we plant and water the seed of faith in people’s lives, actually only God can grow this and cause people to know and love Him for themselves. 
  • We are called before all things to seek first God’s Kingdom, to live in harmony with God and to bring glory to Him. Our first calling isn’t to evangelise but to live lives that provide good witnesses to other people.

Be Persistent In Prayer

  • We are all called to lead lives of mission, but before we talk to people about God, we need to talk to God about people. It is only by being persistent in our prayers to God that people would come to know Him, that we have hearts to really see change happen. 
  • God’s heart breaks for those who are far from Him even more than ours do. Praying allows our relationship with God, and with people, to change and we begin to utilise the opportunities that God gives us. 

 

How To Make the Most of Opportunities

  • In Colossians, Paul is writing from prison. Yet he doesn’t pray that he would be released from prison, but that there would be opportunities to share the gospel.
  • God can use whatever situation we are in to let people hear the gospel. It doesn’t matter if you are a parent, a student, in the business world, or a cleaner, God can use you wherever you are. It goes above and beyond even the words we say and, just by the way we live our lives and conduct ourselves, we can show people the gospel. 
  • And always ask people questions about themselves.
