Jesus Is Worshipped

Jesus is Worshipped.

This does seem a tiny bit obvious, doesn’t it?! Jesus is…. Worshipped! Well….Duh.

However, we are faced with a fascinating question from today’s passage. It was a big question 2000 years ago and is still a big question now.

Jesus is approaching Jerusalem, controversy and death. The pace is picking up and he’s becoming a national figure. Jesus sends a couple of his disciples to go find him a donkey and fulfils a prophecy from Zechariah. He then jumps on the donkey and heads towards Jerusalem.

Now this passage is perhaps one we would read around Easter but stick with me!

8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted. “Hosanna to the Son of David!” Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” 10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?” 11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

There is so much going on here! People are calling Jesus the “Son of David” and “the prophet”. This was a big moment in Jesus ministry. The capital city of Israel was stirred up by his arrival.

For me, the big question that hangs over this passage is, who do you worship? There is seemingly a few different claims on Jesus’ identity here, but we must be clear that we worship a Jesus who had a clear destination in mind. At Christmas when we see baby Jesus everywhere we can remember that we are looking at a King, a Prophet, and the Lord who was to suffer and die.

So this advent, Jesus is….worshipped. Into the world comes our Lord and the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?”
