The Parable of the Mustard Seed

31He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. 32It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”

KEY POINTS

The kingdom grows

• Isaiah says the increase of the kingdom will grow, not just the kingdom will grow but the increase will increase as well.
• The Kingdom of Heaven started small but grows ever larger.
• It has never stopped growing from Jesus to now.
• Each parable reveals a bit more of the nature of the Kingdom because it can’t all be taken in in one go.
• We have a part to play in this growth. Tell people why you attend church. Tell them what God has done for you.
• Scatter the seed, see who responds, the Kingdom won’t grow without some effort.
• Inspiration from the story of Charles Spurgeon and his conversion at a church of ten people that he’d entered to get out of the weather. He would go on to lead a church of 5000.
