KEY POINTS
What is The Law And What’s It’s Purpose?
- The Law in the Old Testament consisted of Ceremonial Law (the temple), Civil Law (the nation) and Moral Law (behaviour).
- There are three purposes of the law which can be found in the New Testament.
- It was designed to control our behaviour, to gaurd over us and to tell us what to do.
How Do We Get Free From The Law?
- To be free from the law somebody has to die!
- Jesus death was what made us free from the law, so that ‘there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus’.
- We no longer have to keep the law in order to get to heaven because we know that it is Jesus who gets us into heaven.
As Christians How Do We Now Relate To The Law?
- Hebrews tells us that none of the Old Testament Ceremonial Law applies to us any more. We don’t have to sacrifice animals on an alter!
- The Civil Law was designed to set Israel apart as the children of God until the purpose of God in them was fulfilled. The coming of Jesus as the messiah fulfilled that purpose so this Civil Law no longer applies to us either.
- When we become Christians we are also released from the burden of the Moral Law. However rather than meaning we behave however we want this relationship and our love for Jesus mean these laws are now written on our hearts. So we behave in a way pleasing to God, not out of duty but out of love.
