Paul’s Journeys and the Epistles

Introduction

The death is not the end! Mark 15:38-16:8

The gap is expected and explained
Matthew 13:24-43,
2 Peter 3:8-9

1). Acts

Acts fits in between the two comings of Jesus. 1:11.

Acts is the second work of Luke to Theophilus, 1:1
Gospel: Nazareth to Jerusalem
Acts: Jerusalem to Rome

Acts is about the gospel spreading to the ends of the earth.
So Acts 1:8 is the pattern geographically
1:1-8:1 the gospel in Jerusalem
8:1-9:31 the gospel in Judea and Samaria
9:32-28:31 the gospel going to Rome (Romans 15:30 then to Spain)

So we read of eight sections, each concluding with ‘gospel’ growth
5:42, 6:7, 31, :24, :35, 6:5, 19:20, 28:30-31

And we read of the gospel moving out theologically from it’s Jewishness
Acts 10: is the gospel only for Jews? No!
Acts 15: is the gospel only for Gentiles if they’ll become Jews? No
Acts 16: the gospel is for anybody!

Acts continues to see fulfilment of the OT promises
So we read of the Spirit’s coming, chapter 2
So we see the nations ‘blessed’

2). Epistles: until he comes

a). THE PAST: The epistles show Christ in all the Scriptures

the gospel is in accord with the OT, not a contradiction
e.g. Romans 3:9-21, 4:1-25,

the gospel is the reality of which the OT was only shadows
e.g. 1 Cor 5:7, Col 3:16-7,

the gospel is the end of where the OT was leading
e.g. Romans 10:1-4, Gal 3:15-25

the gospel is the fulfilment of OT predictions
e.g. Romans 9:33,

b). THE PRESENT: The epistles explain how we should live

the epistles teach us what we should believe
by correcting error, e.g. Colossians 2:8-23, Galatians 3:1

the epistles teach us the way we should behave
e.g. Ephesians 4-6 etc!!

the epistles provide the models of how the gospel is maintained
e.g. 2 Timothy

c). THE FUTURE: The epistles encourage us to wait for Jesus’ coming

the epistles speak of what the end will be like
e.g. Thessalonians 4:13-18, 2 Thessalonians 1:5-10

the epistles explain the reason for the delay
e.g. 2 Peter 3:8-9

the epistles exhort us not to give up
e.g. Hebrews 2:1-4, Ephesians 6:10-17
