Sharing Together On Our Walk With Jesus
Two weeks ago we focussed on the importance of not just sharing the gospel to people but helping people grow in their faith through discipleship. The bible is so big on reminding us to live as a loving community with one another and use our own gifts from the Holy Spirit to build each other up, so this needs to also be applied to discipling others in their walk with God. Each of us need to be intentional in making sure we have a few key people in our lives who understand where we’re at with God, who we trust and will encourage us to grow further as we encourage them. Here are some of the pros of discipling buddies.
Accountability – sins can stop us from feeling truly reliant on God, and everybody is struggling with their own personal temptations. We need to have at least one person we can be honest with about our struggles and this person should hold us accountable to our yearning to be free from this temptation. It’s so much easier to not feast on biscuits during a diet if you know you’ll have to declare your weight to a whole team of weight watchers, who are willing you to succeed.
Prayer – Meet with a friend once a week to pray together, and pray each day for those people in your life. Prayer is powerful!!!!
Read the bible together – It’s important that we keep God at the centre of our discipling chats. It can be too easy to get derailed in conversation by dramas in the wider world and forget to look to God. By reflecting on the bible together, we can learn so much more and share our thoughts on how God is conversing with us through those passages!! Here are some useful questions when studying bible passages:
What does this say about God?
What does this say about people and their relationship with God?
What response does this evoke in us?
Discipling is so for everyone; no one ever reaches a point in life where they are beyond needing godly support from others, and everybody has gifts they can share with others to serve the body of Christ, just as God has called us to do.
So I encourage you to step out in boldness; this week share a conversation and a coffee with someone…or an ice cream. We’re all God’s children seeking our Father’s face afterall.
