This sermon was preached by Tim Simmonds at the CCM Kingsway site of Christ Church Manchester on Sunday 10th March 2019.

This sermon was based on Mark 3:7-19.

A Great Crowd Follows Jesus

7Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great crowd followed, from Galilee and Judea 8and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from around Tyre and Sidon. When the great crowd heard all that he was doing, they came to him. 9And he told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, lest they crush him, 10for he had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed around him to touch him. 11And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” 12And he strictly ordered them not to make him known.

The Twelve Apostles

13And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him. 14And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach 15and have authority to cast out demons. 16He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); 17James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); 18Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot, 19and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

If You Want to Make a Change You Have to Stand up to Power

  • Jesus stood up to the religious elite and to nationalism and greed.
  • He stood up to disease, suffering and poverty, to the forces of evil and to those claiming to be gods and trying to get peoples worship.
  • Jesus is causing a world of trouble. He is standing up to the most significant powers. Standing up to those who want to be worshipped / control / to kill. He is going up against the evil that wants to rule the world.

How does Jesus Stand up to Power?

  • Jesus gathers a team, he goes to a mountain (the place where God is) and calls people to follow him.
  • Jesus calls those he wants. If you’re a believer in Jesus it’s because Jesus wants you. You’re not here by accident – you’re called into his presence.
  • Those who Jesus calls are not the obvious candidates. They are a mixed bunch of everyday people with faults and failings – just like you and me!

What does Jesus Call You to?

  • To be with him – to know him and to spend time with him. Over throw power by relationship.
  • To be sent – preach – doesn’t mean Sunday preach – with friends – family – colleagues
  • Authority over evil – We are not up against flesh and blood.
  • Jesus calls you to himself.
