BIBLE VERSES

This sermon was based on Philippians 4:6-7.

Exhortation, Encouragement, and Prayer

6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

KEY POINTS

Anxiety

• To pray is to step out of self-control. To pray is to surrender.
•
We experience that very real emotional response of worry, anxiety but we don’t hit the panic button. We pray. We bring ourselves before God in prayer.
• The Psalms are a great place to start when it comes to learning to pray in every season.

Be Still

• We can desire control
• David made time to be still, and to look up… He also knew the intimate power and presence of God in his life.
•.
Be still, know the power and the presence of God.

The Character of God

• Paul & Silas, in jail, put their trust in the character of God.
• The promise of Psalm 46 – God is exalted.
• Prayer draws us away from the constraints, the hopelessness of our own lack of control.

Resources

Psalm 69
• Psalm 140
“Prayer is the act of seeing reality from God’s point of view” – Philip Yancey
• Psalm 8:3-4
