In this session, we look at the Doctrine of the Cross.

The Doctrine of the Cross


Always the Plan

1). Purposed before creation, Revelation 13:8 , Acts 4:28

2). Foreshadows in the Law

• Passover, Exodus 12

• Day of Atonement, Leviticus 16

3). Foretold through the Old Testament, see Luke 24:2627, 45-46

• in the garden, Genesis 3:15

• in the writings, Psalm 22,

• by the prophets, Isaiah 53

4).Central in the gospels, e.g. Mark 8:31-38

5). Proclaimed by the apostles, e.g. Acts 17:1-4, 1 Corinthians 2:2, 15:3

6). Gloried in eternity, Revelation 5:6

What it achieves

1). What the cross achieved: for God.

a). It reveals his character

• his love, Romans 5:8, John 3:16

• his justice, Romans 1:17, 3:21-25

b). It proclaims his wisdom,

• in the heavenly places, Ephesians 3:12

• to the mature, 1 Corinthians 2:6

c). It demonstrates his power,

in saving his people, Romans 1:16, 1 Corinthians 1:18

2). What the cross achieves: for us.

a). rescue from God’s wrath, Romans 3:21-25, 5:9-10, Revelation 20:11-21:4

b). reconciliation with God, Romans 5:10

c). access to God, Hebrews 4:14-16, 10:21-23, 12:22-24, Romans 5:1-2

3). What the cross achieves: for Satan

a). his defeat was promised in the garden, Genesis 3:15

b). His defeat was achieved at the cross, Colossians, 2:14,15, Hebrews 2:14.
1 John 3:8

c). His defeat will be consummated at the end, Revelation 20:1-10

so: resist the devil, 1 Peter 5:9
preach the gospel, Acts 26:18

How it applies

1). The community we join, Ephesians 2:1-20

• by grace, through faith

• one new man

2). The motivation we require, Romans 12:1

3). The attitude we adopt, Philippians 2:1-11

4). The model we copy

as we love our brothers, 1 John 4:7-12

as we give our money, 2 Corinthians 8:9

as we share our possessions, 1 john 3:16-18

as we love our wives, Ephesians 5:25-33

5). The suffering we experience, 1 Peter 2:20-23, Romans 8:17
