Truth, Love & Life

Sermon from CCM:City Centre

This sermon was preached by Dave Williams at the CCM:City Centre site of Christ Church Manchester on Sunday 10th June 2018.

This message was part of the ‘Little Letters’ series, preached at Christ Church Manchester’s church in Fallowfield in mid 2018. The full series included the following sermons:

  • Little Letters
  • Little Letters

This sermon was based on 2 John

1The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who know the truth, 2because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever:

3Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father’s Son, in truth and love.

Walking In Truth and Love

4I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father. 5And now I ask you, dear lady—not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another. 6And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it. 7For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward. 9Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, 11for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.

Final Greetings

12Though I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink. Instead I hope to come to you and talk face to face, so that our joy may be complete.

13The children of your elect sister greet you.

Who was 2 John written to?

  • As the start of the letter there is a really personal greeting to “the elect lady” but 2 John was written to a church to encourage the whole congregation to walk in truth, love and life.
  • Many other people in that time were either not believing God became human as Jesus to save us, or that there were extra levels of knowledge to be gained to become a better Christian. Both of these statements are wrong. Having a relationship with Jesus gives fullness of life and truth – we live with Him in eternal life forever.

Love and Truth

  • God gives us the strength to love our enemies. When we read our Bibles and spend time with God then the truth settles into us and allows the Holy Spirit to change us. Through God we can increase in joy and patience and love for our neighbours.
  • It’s important to stand firm in the truth of the Scripture. Don’t allow what seem like clashes or discrepancies in Scripture to compromise your faith. Don’t gloss over parts of the Bible without thinking through things.

  • It is so important to not be seduced by the world’s opinions and cultures – the Bible is truth and is what protects your faith. Faith brings you into eternal life through Jesus and his death and resurrection
  • We are not just another path on the same mountain as other religions. We believe Jesus is THE way, THE truth, and THE life – the only one who should be followed.
  • In this truth we should encourage each other in our spiritual walks as one community. We need to build each other up in truth and in love, encouraging each other in faith and as they continue journeying with Jesus.
