This sermon was based on Matthew 6:9-13

The Lord’s Prayer

9Pray then like this:
“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
10 Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread,
12 and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

  • “Hedonism is concerned with the maximising of pleasure and the minimising of pain.”
  • This looks good. This will feel good. Therefore this is good. Do it.

  • The Bible has a slightly different perspective – Not to throw cold water on joy and pleasure…
    • Quite the contrary – we have pleasure forevermore at God’s right hand.
    • Sometimes things look good and feel good, but they are not good.
  • Eve… “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate…”
    • If it looks good, if it feels good do it.
  • David… “It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful.”
    • If it looks good, if it feels good, do it.
  • What happened – it messed up everything

The Lord’s Prayer

  • Jesus teaches us two petitions that are contrary to the hedonistic view.
  • Lead us not into temptation – pray that we don’t face the time of temptation.
  • Deliver us from evil – pray that if temptation does come, that we stand victorious over it.

Temptations and Our Responses

  • Temptation from the flesh – RUN
  • Temptation from the world – RENEW MIND BRINGING TRANSFORMATION
  • Temptation from the devil – RESIST
